Michael
Anthony Holding C.D.
February 16, 1954, in Kingston, Jamaica.
West Indies, Jamaica, Tasmania, Derbyshire, Canterbury
and Lancashire.
Umpires nicknamed Holding
'Whispering Death' for his aggressive and quick
playing, and for his smooth approach to the wicket.
In 1976 in Jamaica, the touring Indians under
Bishen Bedi felt his wrath and no less than five
Indian batsmen were 'absent hurt' during that
Kingston test.
Later that year, in England, Holding established
a new record for the most wickets taken by a West
Indian in a test match (14 for 149). In a career
that spanned a decade and ended prematurely in
1986/87, Holding played 60 test matches and captured
249 wickets at an average of 23.68. He was named
Wisden's Cricketer of the Year 1977.
